Members of the Quantum Technology Club are heading down to Shell Island, in Wales, this week to operate an amateur radio special event station, GB8SOS, with members of the Wales Digital Radio Group (WDRG).
GB8SOS – honouring brave volunteers of the RNLI, NCI and independent lifeboats and coast rescue teams
The station is being run to raise awareness of amazing work of the volunteers of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) and other independent lifeboats and coastal rescue teams around the coasts of the British Isles and Channel Islands.
Working with the Wales Digital Radio Group
This will be the fourth running of GB8SOS and the collaboration between the two groups. The station will be set up and start operating on Wednesday, 14th May, and cease on the following Monday, 19th May.
The two groups also collaborate at the Liverpool MakeFest and will be reunited on the 5th July at Liverpool’s Central Library. There, both groups will be demonstrating amateur radio to those attending this really popular techie-fest.

Derek (G7LFC) will be on-site from Wednesday evening, whilst Alison (M6COV) and Rebecca (M6BUB) will be in attendance from Friday evening.

SOS Radio Week
GB8SOS is one of twenty-six SOS Radio Week stations that will be operating at various times throughout the month of May. SOS Radio Week was formed in 2017 to raise awareness of the work of the unpaid RNLI volunteers who risk their own lives to save others at risk around our coasts and out to sea. Since the then the event has been expanded to included the volunteers of the NCI and independent lifeboat stations and coastal rescue teams.
