The Ormskirk Fun Palace is one of a number of events that take place every year over the first weekend in October. Its purpose is to celebrate the genius of the community, be it in art, science, technology, design, making; and the list goes on. Those who take part in running activities at the Fun Palace aim to share their special skill with others to encourage them to get involved, learn new skills, meet new people and have some fun doing so.
The Quantum Technology Club have taken part in several Fun Palaces hosted by the staff of the Ormskirk Library; in 2022 just one of over 190 events held around the country. We shared lots of different aspects of what we do and had plenty of interactive activities for visitors to engage in. These included:
- Giant falling blocks game – akin to a rather famous Russian game that was invented in the eighties.
- Desktop electronic four-in-a-row game.
- Amateur radio special event station making contact with other stations all over Europe.
- A Morse Code treasure hunt that had the participants scouring the library for letters which then had to be rearranged in to a phrase and tapped out on a Morse key to win a free prize.
- Free key rings printed by our 3D-printer demonstration.
Not only did we share what we do to encourage others to have a go themselves, we also used the event to promote the restart of our very popular, and always over-subscribed, Quantum Code Club. Our Code Club enables youngsters to experiment with, and learn about, various aspects of technology with members of the Quantum Technology Club on-hand to help them code, build electronic circuits, make things and let their creativity shine through.
There were lots of things for visitors to have a go at, at the 2022 and we look forward to attending again in 2023, on the 7th October at Ormskirk Library.
