Little Ham, the brainchild of Quantum Technology Club member Alison Hughes (M6COV), made an appearance at this year’s National Hamfest along with several siblings. The siblings were rehoused with Amateur Radio operators who promised to look after them and take them on trips whenever possible.

Alison knitted Little Ham for her husband, Derek (G7LFC), several years ago and it has been on many SOTA activations with the pair since, often photographed and appearing on Derek’s Facebook page. Little Ham models outdoor gear, complete with bobble hat, walking boots and rucksack. Inside the sack can be found Little Ham’s very own portable radio set, the microphone of which fits neatly inside the front pocket of its walking top. Embroidered on the rucksack is Derek’s callsign.
Since then, several of Little Hams family have found their way to Alison and Derek’s friends and many more people have expressed interest in obtaining one. So at this year’s Norbreck Rally, several more were adopted by radio amateurs in return for a small ‘finders’ fee. Then again, this weekend, a few more found new homes.
All obtaining one of Little Ham’s relatives have pledged to put Little Ham forward and centre in their amateur radio activities, be that in the shack, at special event stations, or out and about at rallies or on various activations (summits, parks, etc.).
