It is with great sadness that we have to report that one of our founding members, Stuart Cartlidge G0MJG, passed away on Tuesday. He was a great advocate for our amateur radio hobby and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Derek G7LFC, one of our Activity Co-ordinators, knew Stuart for many years and worked with him on several projects. They were on the Southport & District Amateur Radio Club (SADARC) committee together where Stuart led the training team with Derek. Together with other members of the club, they put a lot of candidates through their amateur radio foundation course with a high degree of success. Stuart played a vital role in delivering the Intermediate practical sessions too.
When he wasn’t training candidates, Stuart could often be found up a hill / mountain with his dear friend Kieth G0OXV. The pair travelled all over the country together and achieved high status within the Summits on the Air (SOTA) awards scheme.
Stuart was very active and could always be depended upon to support club activities, members and the hobby in general. Dean M5DR recalls that “Stuart was a great ambassador for the hobby. He came to my school when I was in 4th year and did an after-school club for radio.” He goes on to say that, having done the Foundation course with SADARC, he came back to the club to do his Foundation practical assessments where, “Stuart helped me with the study and I did the practicals at his house”. Never one to pass up an opportunity to help someone was our Stuart.
We say ‘our’ because when the idea was floated to form the Quantum Amateur Radio and Technology Society in 2017, Stuart was there and is down in our club’s history as one of its founding members.
Derek concludes by saying that, “Stuart was a quiet person, rarely ruffled by anything, a huge support and someone I could really rely on when things needed doing.”
